After hobbling my way around Rome and the Vatican City on my bum ankle, I decided to really push it and spend a day limping around Pompeii.
Most people that I’ve talked to have done Pompeii as a day trip from Naples. I wasn’t going to Naples and didn’t have time to add an extra few days to my itinerary. However, I really wanted to see the ruins at Pompeii, so I decided to do a day trip from Rome. It was a four hour train ride round trip, so I had to get up early to catch the first train out. While I wouldn’t say it’s the best way to fit in a trip to Pompeii, for me it was totally worth it.
I’m sure most of you are familiar with the history behind the volcanic eruption at Pompeii so I won’t go into great historical detail, other than to mention that archaeological excavations weren’t started on the sites until 1748. However, it hasn’t changed much since that time.
I had seen pictures of the bodies that were encased in ash and that was really what I expecting. I was surprised to see that ruins of the entire city still stand. I wasn’t expecting the archaeological site to be quite so big, but it’s really enormous and perfectly preserved.
